Mystery Concrete Structure, North Loughton Valley Park

Everyone knows that Milton Keynes is made of concrete, right? Well, that’s certainly what you’ll hear from people who don’t live here, and leaving aside the question of whether the reputation is deserved, the city’s concrete certainly serves as a canvas for a lot of striking – graffiti? wanton vandalism? street art? I actually like seeing the range of creative things sprayed and painted around the city, and often photograph them on my walks. I’ve sometimes thought I should pick a particular spot and photograph how the graffiti changes over time, as a sort of urban history piece to document the changing landscape.

Maybe I’ll do just that with the mystery structure I found on my way towards the canal, I’ll pop back every month or two and document what’s been painted on it lately. It sits in the middle of a field next to the North Loughton Valley Park path between Lodge Lake and the Bradwell Windmill, and I’m fascinated by it. My first assumption was that it was something to do with the canal or the balancing lakes, but after getting closer and looking at it from all angles, I’m not so sure. There’s an eerie section down at the base where the railings are bent just enough to make space for someone to crawl through, and peering down there it does seem to open up into a bigger chamber underneath. I was there on a particularly gloomy morning for August, and although there’s a path running right past it, I did get the distinct feeling that I really shouldn’t be there, and didn’t hang around any longer than necessary to take these pictures.

Searching online in the old-fashioned way didn’t help shed any light on its purpose, so I turned to AI instead… Microsoft’s co-pilot suggested:

This structure appears to be an abandoned World War II fort. The concrete base and the semi-circular metal framework on top are characteristic of military fortifications from that era. The graffiti and surrounding vegetation suggest it has been out of use for some time.

I’m.. not convinced. If anyone does know what it is – or was – then I’d love to hear from you!

Update – December 19th 2024

I’m very glad I asked for input here because I’ve just had a note from Jay, who writes:

This is another piece of the linear park flood management\prevention network in Milton Keynes. Much like the overflows and โ€œPlugholesโ€ in reservoirs, once water levels are high enough for this basin to flood and fill, this structure will manage the level of the fill and redirect excess water to another part of the network.

Thank-you very much, Jay! That does make sense, and it’s great to have the mystery solved and to know that this forbidding structure had a practical purpose.
